Justin Boxler - Niedermorschwihr, Alsace
A little northwest of Colmar, we find the town of Niedermorschwihr, where the Justin Boxler Winery is located. The farm has been producing wine since 1672 and has traditionally been passed down from father to son through many generations and today the 11th generation is personified by the young couple Charlotte and Florent, who manage the activities.
Justin Boxler has approx. 12 hectares spread over the area: Katzenthal (5 ha), Niedermorschwihr (4.70 ha), Ingersheim (1 ha), Turckheim (0.80 ha) and finally Ammerschwihr (0.60 ha). It is all divided into 80 different parcels, which, however, are no more than max. 8 km from the property.
More than half of the vineyard's area is devoted to so-called noble grape varieties: Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Pinot Gris and Riesling. However, it is Riesling that takes up the most space with a planted area of 4 hectares. However, Pinot Noir can also be found in the range and is ready to develop in the future. Even now their base Pinot Noir is quite tasty and the Barriques edition absolutely excellent.
After following the specifications of organic viticulture for a decade, Justin Boxler has completed an official "AB" conversion process in 2019. Vintage 2022 became the first harvest to be certified as "AB" (organic farming).
The wine-growing area in Alsace is extremely diverse and consists of as many as 13 geological soil types. This forms a mosaic of terroirs that contribute to the development of wines with a strong personality. In general, the soil at Domaine Justin Boxler consists of granite, limestone and clay and marlogresous soil. Granite is found in the Brand, Sommerberg and Wineck-Schlossberg vineyards and limestone in Florimont and Lieu-dit-Pfoeller. We have of course brought home "a little bit of everything", so if you are into terroir, there is really something to geek out about. We have tasted many wines from the farm and find the quality to be extremely high, while the price level is reasonable.
