Kellerie Kaltern - Alto Adige, Italy

Mike Mortensen

Kellerei Kaltern is a cooperative whose existence can be traced back to the year 1900, located on the shores of Lake Kaltern in the Italian wine region of Alto Adige.

The cooperative's members all have equal voting rights to the general meetings and all the winegrowers know which wines their grapes are used for and all the grapes are handpicked. That in itself is a really good story!

But Alto Adige is also the wine region in the world with the most awards per winery, and the quality is therefore towering everywhere you go. James Suckling has given 16 of the house's wines over 90 points in the 2021 vintage, and Quintessenz Kalterersee Classico Superiore has in vintage 21 got the coveted 3 glasses of Gambero rosso for the 3rd time in just 5 years.

Kellerei Kaltern makes completely stylish wines, both from completely local varieties such as Schiava, which are both used for the completely light table wines but which can also produce strong spicy wines. Sauvignon Blanc.

The height above the sea and the location in the middle of the Dolomites means that you can almost talk about cold climate wines, despite the IT country stamp. This makes the wines lighter, fresher, and the mountain soil gives the wines a lot of minerality.
