VDP Weingut Seeger, Badische Bergstrasse, Baden
For more than 350 years, the Seeger family has been making wine in the town of Leimen, which lies just south of Heidelberg. The current owners of the winery, Sanni and Thomas Seeger, are the 13th generation of the family that has grown wine since the beginning in 1655. Thomas Seeger was one of the first to plant French Pinot noir clones in Germany and he is also very experimental and perhaps a little "geeky" with cask aging, cask types, etc
In 2010, Weingut Seeger became a member of the VDP (Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter), which in itself is a quality seal. In addition, Seeger is rated with a whopping 5 stars in Eichelmann's large "wine bible".
Seegers grows wine on approx. 11.5 hectares and produces just over 60,000 bottles annually. All grapes come from the best areas of Herrenberg: Oberklamm, Spermen and Fischer, and form the basis for a number of fantastic wines at the absolute high end of the quality scale.
Thomas Seeger's own statement: "weil ich mir damals keinen großen Burgunderwein leisten konnte, musset ich ihn selber machen"
The town of Leimen and the area in general have a very old story to tell. It was the Romans who, 2000 years ago, brought wine production to the area along the "strata montana", the mountain road. They planted the first vines on the sunny western flank of the Odenwald, which stretches from Darmstadt in the north to down behind Leimen in the south.
